What are your strongest qualities as a producer? My strongest qualities as a producer is the fact that I do a lot of different kinds of music. I do R&B, pop, east coast, hardcore rap, down south and just about anything else. I can do whatever needs to be done musical. I still maintain my own individual sound. How would you describe your individual sound? I am really musical. Music that is being produced today is hot but it is really simple. I have a way of mixing simple with complex as far as musical. How did you link up with Diddy to do the “Come To Me” record? I have a friend that use to be one of the Hitmen for Bad Boy. I went to Bad Boy a couple of months ago with my lawyer to play some tracks for Diddy. He didn’t find anything that he liked at that moment for his album. After that I holla’ed at my man and said that I have these tracks and I want you to check them out. He was like this shit is hot and I can probably make something happen with this. I was like cool, do what you do and then just holla at me. We found a songwriter to write to and to record it. The track was originally for Danity Kane but Diddy had the track and wanted it for his album. He scrapped the song that was originally on there and took it to some writers over at Bad Boy. Wasn’t there some conflict about the credits to the track? I had an agreement with the cat that made it happen that the standard percentage of a placement is twenty percent. That’s just what it is and that’s the agreement we had. But I guess as soon as the song got placed and he found out that it was going to be the first single, he was like “yo man we are gonna do this together”. I was like together, yea we’re doing this together and that’s what’s up. When it was time to get the first half of the check, he was like we’re gonna spilt everything down the middle 50/50. I was like 50/50, what do you mean by that? He was like he produced on the track. I asked him how did you produce the track? He said that he set up the situation and he knew the songwriter but I’m like they didn’t even use the song that your songwriter wrote to. The beat was already done when I gave it to him. It was nothing to be added. It was a complete beat. He went on to tell me this story on the fact that he is signed to Bad Boy and that he should get co-production credit. At the end of the day, did you get full credit for the record? At the end of the day I had to call Bad Boy directly. I really didn’t want a law suit type of situation because I am fairly new to the game. I’m not trying to fight everybody and go through all kinds of battles. I owned the copyright of the song, so it would be right that my name comes first on the credits. How do you feel about ghost production? Ghost production is cool but at least give me some type of credit. If I am dealing with a big producer and it takes doing some ghost production to get to the next level of my career, then I am cool with that. We have to have an agreement set before I do anything. I don’t want to agree on something and in the middle of the projects the agreement is changed to benefit you. Ghost production is cool but I’m not to excited about that but everybody had to do what they have to do to eat. If you’re a big producer, you’re not losing anything by giving the little guy some credit. That’s how I look at it. With the “Come To Me” record, did you do a session with Diddy during the recording or did you just send the record off to Bad Boy? He ended up recording the record in Miami and I was unable to make it. Shortly after it was completed I listened to it. What differs you from other producers? Honestly, its my work ethic and my diversity in music. I’m in it 24 hours a day. I’m always doing some type of music. I’m always working with artist and songwriters. I engineer and I also do some mixing. I do a little bit of everything. In the long run I believe my ability to do all of these will help me maintain my longevity. What’s the concept behind your catch phrase “Jai On The MuthaF#%*in Track”? (Laugh). Its simple. That’s just my tag. As a producer, the best way to stay working is to have a brand. You want to be branded or have the fans know who you are. You don’t want to be a hot producer and nobody knows who you are. What other artist are you working with right now? I working with an artist name Dolla who is signed to Akon. I’m also working with a cat name Haze who is signed to Interscope. Hopefully I’ll be the opportunity to work with Brittney Spears sometime soon. |
