How long have you been doing production? What made you get into producing and who kind of influenced you into getting into it? It’s a bunch of producers that influenced me but the one that gave me some hands on production tips was Rodney Jerkins and Kendrick Dean, that’s my boy right there. There were a couple other different people that actually showed me how to hook up the studio and run it. With having the chance to work with Rodney and Kendrick who both are getting a bunch of placements right now, do you still keep in contact with them? Yeah for sure, you have to keep in touch with them so that you can stay in the game. They know more then I do right now. I speak to Kendrick on a continuous bases and I talk Rodney on a continuous bases. What is the biggest mistake that you’ve made as a
producer? Right now, not being aggressive enough. In this business you have to be really really aggressive and you have to go for what you know and go get it because you get comfortable because of all the people that you know in the business. You think that they are going to give it to you on a silver platter, which is not the case. You have to work and go get it. That’s my mistake, not being aggressive enough. People have heard some of your work and are amazed by it. So do you think the problem with you not willing to be as aggressive is causing you not to have the opportunity to be placed on major albums? I think its just transition as well and not just being aggressive because hip-hop is something new to me. I’m doing my thing in Christian music, getting placed. I am doing my thing in that but I have yet to get placed on a R&B or a hip-hop album. So are you more of a Christian producer or all around? I would say all around. I wouldn’t say that my genre is one thing because I’m a musician and I can do anything. If someone wanted me to do a country western song, I’m going to do it. As a producer you have to be well rounded and just do one thing. Tell me a little about your company Drumworks Inc.? Drumworks, Inc is a production company that I started about four or five years ago. Basically what we do right now is we create instructional drum videos. At the present time we have three instructional videos and I have my first artist, which is Chris Coleman. He just came out on my third DVD and we just got our first distribution deal a couple of weeks ago with World Music For All and we are going to be in stores in the next couple of months. We are going to be in Sam Ashe and a lot of the mom and pop stores. We are getting ready to do a tour to actually promote the DVD. With the instructional DVD, is it more for people that have experience with drums or is it for beginners? Yea and no, and the reason that I say yea is that you would have to be able to play drums a little bit. I say no because when I was younger I got a much well advance DVD when I was like eight or nine years old and it was very advance. But what happens is once you look at something and hear something over and over and over again, its gonna get stuck in your brain. It’s gonna start coming to you and your gonna start repeating it and playing it and eventually start emulating what your hearing and seeing on the video so it’s a yes and no thing. If you’re a beginner, this wouldn’t be for you but if you’re trying to soak it like a sponge then yea you can get it and learn it, but it will take time. Say that these DVDs take off, will you be making more DVD series of other instruments? Its just not dedicated to drums. It’s the whole aspect of music. We want to do keyboard DVDs, we want to do bass DVDs, we want to do guitar DVDs, organs, singing, and anything that can instruct a person to enhance their musical ability. Who knows, maybe we can do a DVD on studio production. How to advance your studio production, and what to get on different financial budgets. If you can’t afford certain things, we can tell you what to get with your budget? What can we expect from you in the next couple of
months? On the DVD tip, you can expect us to be in stores pretty soon and we are gonna do a tour and we are going to be in magazines. We are going to be in different mom and pop stores. As far as music production, I have a song coming out with this choir called Youth For Christ. They have a song that I wrote on their album. That’s about it for right now. |
