It wasn’t that long ago that Grammy Nominated
Producer, Kendrick "WyldCard" Dean could be found in a four-wall
classroom teaching teenagers about Mesopotamia and the rise and fall of the
Roman Empire. Encouraged by musical mentor and cousin Bryan-Michael Cox
(Usher, Mary J. Blidge, Mariah Carey). “WyldCard” would eventually take
a leap of faith and pursue his dream of making music for the world. In late
2004, Kendrick made his first public mark with a song he produced with Cox
called “Bad Habit”. That song was recorded by multi-platinum artist
Destiny’s Child, and eventually gave him his first Grammy nomination.
Today, the Miami, FL native is one of the most sought after producer/writers
in the music business. “Wyldcard’s” impression on the music industry
is thunderous and continues to grow at lightening speed. He has worked with
some of music’s hottest artist including Chris Brown; “Say Goodbye”,
Fantasia, Mary J. Blidge, Ciara and Nicole Scherzinger (PCD). “I thank God
everyday for my gift. Along with being a very talented record producer,
Dean’s writing skills are as equally crafty. He wrote the theme song to
the current season of MTV’s Making The Band and has written or co-written
singles for Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Claudette Ortiz, and Chante Moore and
Kenny Lattimore among others. “Jinsei Manabi is a Japanese term used to
described someone who is a student to the everyday occurrences of life. I
seek to learn something new on a daily basis. I truly believe that my music
transcends genre. I create from the heart.

| Where are you
originally from? I'm originally from Miami , Florida . Who are some of the artist that you have worked with? I worked on three songs for Joe's upcoming album. I've also worked with Destiny's Child, Mya, Omarion, Toni Braxton, Ciara, Chris Brown, Fantasia, and the list goes on. What are some of the projects that you're set to work on in the next couple of months? Gwen Stefani, Elton John, U2, Brian Mcknight, Brandy How did you get into doing production? Well first and foremost music has always been a part of my life. I remember my Godmother buying me a Fisher Price drum set when I was a little kid. When I got older my Grandfather bought me a piano. I learned to play the piano in church. As a teen my parents and my aunt bought me my first keyboard, an Ensoniq KS32,which had a built-in sequencer. I started to make tracks. I use to listen to the radio and re-track some of my favorite songs attempting to recreate the records. I remember trying to find the same drum sound on my keyboard or the same string sound as the ones in my favorite songs. That's how I began to understand music composition. As for my way into the industry, I was fortunate to know someone who had already been successful in the industry for some time. Bryan Cox believed in my talent and invited me to produce records with him. I heard that you were a high school teacher before you got any success in music industry? That is true. I taught World History for 2 years at Evans High School in Orlando, FL . Rumors are floating around stating you are going to be on the next season of Making Of The Band . How did you earn that opportunity? My production partner Bryan-Michael Cox got a call about three months ago from Diddy, inviting us to work with his new girl group. Diddy wanted us to set the tone. He (P. Diddy) was impressed with our work ethic and particularly liked Mary J. Bliges Be Without You record Produced by Bryan-Michael Cox. Fortunately I was in the right place at the right time. I wrote the theme song called One Shot I also wrote a song called Back Up and co-produced and co-wrote a ballad entitled Ride For You. Do you feel that once the season of Making Of The Band is over with that more people will recognize who you are and that more work will come? I believe that more people will be familiar with our sound and know who we are and greater fan base will come. As far as workload, the industry knows who we are. All in all, it may be a little more difficult to walk through the mall or get gas without being noticed...(laugh) What do you think has been your greatest accomplishment as a producer? (Laugh). I haven't experienced it yet. As of now, I would have to say my first Grammy nomination for Best R&B Contemporary Album Destiny's Child "Destiny Fulfilled" It happened so fast. Not only was it my first and it was Destiny's Child , it was also my first placement. To have your first placement be nominated I would say is a great accomplishment. It happened in such a short time. I had only been in the business for a little over a year. I know you asked for one but I'll give you another one. The fact that we as a team, (which includes myself, Bryan Cox, Adonis and Johnta' Austin ) have been able to place about forty-five records this year in less than ninety days. That's unheard of. People do about forty-five songs in ninety days but to actually have them selected to go on an album, that's unheard of! Being bless to have the opportunity to be around super producer Bryan Cox and people such as P. Diddy during Making Of The Band , does that inspire you to work harder to one-day start your own label? Yea, I'm inspired to do things beyond starting a label. I'm inspired as an entrepreneur, and I'm inspired creatively. I want to one-day drive the cars that they drive or live in the houses that they live inlol I think working with Bryan Cox is a very special thing because he is a very experienced, well rounded individual. From him, I'm growing creatively, increasing my business sense, and developing socially. Just being around him is being blessed on a daily bases. who better to learn from! What projects are you associated with that we should look out for from now till the end of the year? Definitely look out for my work on Brian McKnight's album. Look out for Omarion I'm excited about that album. Omarion, is going to really surprise people this next go around. He has really improved vocally and you already know he has the dancing down. He is going to give the world a real hot album. Look out for Claudette Ortiz. She was the female from City High. I co-wrote and co-produced her first single Can't Get Enough I think it's a great record and she sounds incredible on it. I really think she is going to do well. Look out for Bella, a girl group on Warner Brothers, which consists of two singers and one rapper. Look out for Q. Amey. Q is on Blackground/Universal. Vocally he is a cross between Deron from 112 and Tank. You can't get no better then that! He is just incredible! Definitely look out for MTV Making Of The Band episodes. |
